The United States Pulp and Paper Industry is responsible for about 30% of the paper and paperboard market. According to the EPA, the majority of the facilities (67%) comprised in the Pulp and Paper Industry are characterized as having 100 or more employees in order to meet this growing demand. In total, there are approximately 172,000 employees working in the Pulp and Paper Industry. With human capital at such a great number, it comes as no surprise that corporations are making their employee safety one of their top concerns. As another result of the large amount of employees, compliance can be a tedious and expensive venture. With all of the regulations with which corporations must comply, the Pulp and Paper industry can truly benefit from a comprehensive system which facilitates maintaining compliance with state, federal, and other regulatory laws.
From October 2004 until September 2005, OSHA issued 374 citations to the Pulp and Paper Industry and fines totaling $968,628. The average worker incidence rate was 3.2 per 100 full-time employees and the Pulp and Paper Industry had 19 fatalities.
"The Clean Air Act requires EPA to regulate emissions of toxic air pollutants from a published list of industrial sources referred to as "source categories." As required under the Act, EPA has developed a list of source categories that must meet control technology requirements for these toxic air pollutants. The EPA is required to develop regulations (also known as rules or standards) for all industries that emit one or more of the pollutants in significant quantities. EPA has developed implementation tools (eg. checklists, brochures) to help comply with the standards."
Information from the EPA's TRI (Toxic Release Inventory) Data, among other regulatory guidelines, can be quite reflective of the environmental initiatives which are taken on by a corporation. The process related to on-site releases (to air, bodies of water, and land) and transfers (to publicly-owned treatment works, recycling, energy recovery, treatment, and disposal) can result in a large amount of reporting and a need for compliance solutions. According to the EPA's 2000 data on TRI (SIC Codes 261-263), the release of toxic chemicals from the Pulp and Paper industry totaled approximately 263 million pounds (66% to the air, 22% to the water and 9% to the land). With the largest amount of TRI released by one company as over 5 million pounds, the tracking and reporting of chemicals such as methanol, ammonia, hydrochloric acid, manganese compounds, and sulfuric acid can be overwhelming without the proper compliance management system. Having the proper chemical recovery system in place can also be critical.
