Much attention should be directed to maintaining the safety of the employees in this sector, especially considering that the Mining Industry has been labeled as one of the five Target Industries. This means that is in an industry with particularly high incident/injury rates.
From October 2004 until September 2005, OSHA issued 47 citations to the mining industry and fines totaling $134,225. The average worker incidence rate was 4.3 per 100 full-time employees and the Mining Industry had 152 fatalities.
The Mining Industry has a distinct difference from other sectors. Unlike those sectors whose industries fall within the SIC Codes of 20-39, the Oil and Gas Industry is not held accountable to the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) policy of reporting their data to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI).
The most common waste generated in the Mining Industry is produced water. Another waste facing the Mining Industry is drilling waste which, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API), has been produced into amounts up to 361 million barrels a year (1985). In 1995, the numbers had gotten a little better at 146 million barrels, which can largely be attributed to the reduced number of well drilled. Drilling fluids (comprised of muds and rock cuttings) account for the largest portion of this drilling waste.
API also reports that "In 2004, the environmental investment by the U.S. oil and natural gas industry amounted to $10.3 billion, an increase of about 2.4 percent from 2003 expenditures. Since 1995, API estimates that about $88 billion was spent to protect the environment. One of the results of this investment is that as the demand for oil and natural gas grows higher, pollution levels are decreasing." It is obvious that many U.S. Oil and Gas companies are working as a whole to contribute to lessening the negative effects which can result from this industry.

Some questions to ask yourself:
Is our company using our resources as effectively and efficiently as possible to lessen negative effects resulting from releases and transfers, among other environmental issues?
What can our company do to stay competitive while still investing our resources to keeping our employees and our environment safe?
Are we losing too much time, money, and other resources dealing with non-compliance?
Are we using the most cost-effective methods of compliance software to stay compliant?
If not, are we looking to alternatives to our existing compliance system?
