One of the important issues for those in the Textile Industry to track and manage is the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). Some of the common transfers and releases are due to solvents which are used in production for coating textile materials. Examples of these chemicals are methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene, and methanol accounting for about 64% (about 11.4 million pounds) of the total industry release. However, due to differences in the manufacturing process, the release and transfer information varies among facilities.
The Top 5 Releases by the Textile Industry:
Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)
Toluene
Methanol
Ammonia
Xylenes (Mixed Isomers)
Of these chemicals, which represent the extreme majority of releases by the Textile Industry, 98% of them are released into the air. As you might imagine, there is a great need for a complex system of tracking and management in order to maintain compliance with the Clean Air Act, among others.
